Not everyone has the privilege of having people around who will look after them when they’re old and suffering from illnesses. Whether it’s the old woman who lost her husband and was forced to work as a domestic help at her age, or the old man who got cheated out of his property and was thrown out of his house by his own children, they all have something in common - they lack a loving and supportive family. These are not just stories, but the reality of all the elderly at Rojavanam Old Age Home in Delhi.

“The very people who brought up their children, worked hard for them and built them a comfortable life, are now suffering on the streets without even a morsel of food. While some of them find a place to stay in old age homes, many of them spend the last years of their lives mourning the loss of everything they ever loved. No one deserves to live like that.” - Sunitha, Superintendent, Rojavanam Old Age Home
All The Elderly People Here Have Painful Stories To Share
Rojavanam Old Age Home was started three years ago and has rescued over a hundred elderly people so far. Their volunteers work tirelessly, spreading awareness and sharing pamphlets with people on the streets, outside places of worship, in the slums and more.
“Many of them read our pamphlets and come here looking for shelter. Some are left here by their families, and others are found on the road with painful stories of torture that they’ve suffered at the hands of others. But because of their age, all of them are struggling with some condition or the other - high blood pressure, diabetes, cataract and even rare condition. We not only have to ensure they’re getting nourishing meals but also look after their medical needs based on their illness.”
The old age home currently looks after over 50 elderly people, all of whom have no money or savings. Having worked all their lives and provided for others, they haven’t been able to save anything that can help them through their old age. Rojavanam Old Age Home is truly their second chance at having a supportive family. However, they’re currently facing several challenges to continue looking after their needs.
With No Ambulance, They’re Struggling To Get Timely Medical Care
The old age home has the capacity to house over 50 elderly people, however, Mohana points out how the lack of resources is what stops them from rescuing more of them. Every month is a struggle to get enough groceries to feed all of them and during emergencies, their struggles only increase.
“We don’t have an ambulance, so even during emergencies we have to book an auto, which takes time. Because of this, we haven’t been able to take so many of them to the hospital in time. At their age, this is a huge risk to their lives. An ambulance will help us give them the medical care they need and also ensure they reach the hospital safely and comfortably. And healthy meals will give them the strength to recover faster.”
Sunitha and the entire team at Rojavanam Old Age Home wake up every day with one mission in mind - to make the rest of the lives of all the elderly people in their care, their happiest days. You can support them.
