Farmer’s 9-Day-Old Baby On Ventilator Support Needs Your Help To Survive

“She was only 600 grams when she was born! It’s been 9 days, and we’ve never held our baby girl in our arms or seen her without tubes. The ventilator is keeping her alive and she still has a long way to go before she starts to get better - but I’m running out of time and money,” says Nilesh Patil before he’s once again asked to buy medicines for his little one. Nilesh hurries towards the pharmacy without wasting any time. He knows that there’s not a second to waste.

70 km from the hospital in Nashik, Maharashtra where Nilesh, Jyoti, and their newborn are, lies Nilesh’s small piece of land, that the rains have now destroyed. He has lost all his crops, and with it, his only source of income. But there’s nothing he can do. As his baby girl fights for her life in the NICU, Nilesh fights to continue her treatment for another day. However, despite his best efforts, he’s failing.

Every Breath Is Painful For This 9-Day-Old Baby Girl

Jyoti was still in her fifth month of pregnancy when their baby girl was born with extremely low birth weight and respiratory distress syndrome - breathing difficulty caused by underdeveloped lungs, common in premature babies.

“Jyoti had been admitted to the hospital a month before the delivery due to complications in her pregnancy, so when she started bleeding in the fifth month, I was so worried. I thought I would lose my wife and child. But luckily she was in safe hands, and our baby girl was rushed to the NICU minutes after she was born. Although it breaks my heart that we haven’t been able to carry her or hold her little hands, I’m grateful she’s getting the care she needs.”

However, Nilesh and Jyoti’s newborn’s condition is critical. She can’t breathe on her own and needs to stay on ventilator support for longer to survive. Her lungs haven’t developed, her weight is still low, and the safe and sterile environment of the NICU is keeping her alive.

“We can’t risk her getting any infections, which is why we can only see from afar through the glass in the NICU. We get to see her 2-3 times a day for a few minutes, and those are the happiest and saddest minutes of our day. Happy, because we get to see her again, and sad because we’re worried that it might be the last time…”

They’ve Used All Their Savings & Borrowed From Everyone They Know

Nilesh has spent nearly 4 lakhs on his baby’s treatment so far, this includes all this savings and the little he was able to borrow from family members. Additionally, he also spent on his wife’s hospital stay before the delivery.

“There’s only so many people I can ask. They’ve all given me as much as they could, I can’t expect them to do more. It’s been weeks since I’ve been able to work, I have to stay in the hospital in case the doctor calls or my baby’s condition deteriorates. My wife is still recovering from the delivery, I can’t leave my family.”

Nilesh and Jyoti are simple people. All they want now is for their baby to go back home with them, healthy and happy. However, this will remain a distant dream without continued treatment. Your support will help these parents save their newborn baby’s life.
