When Rupa first heard from doctors that her 3-month-old baby needed surgery, her heart froze. I kept asking them, 'Why? What happened to my child? She is so tiny. How will she survive this? Doctors reassured her that they would fix the small bulge in her spine and all would be fine. But that didn’t happen.’- Rupa clutches her daughter, Shreya, tightly, her eyes filled with tears.

Years later, the bulge in her spine has only grown bigger, pressing down on her tiny body, making even sleeping a painful struggle. 6-year-old Shreya has never taken a single step in her life. Born with a severe spinal condition, lumbar meningomyelocele with paraplegia, she has been paralyzed in her lower body since birth. 

Their daughter urgently needs a series of complex surgeries, followed by months of ICU care, medicines, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation for 3-4 months which will cost them INR 24 lakhs - an impossible amount that Surajit, a daily wage labourer earning just Rs.100-150 a day, cannot even fathom.

The pressure on her spine keeps intensifying with every passing day

Shreya's condition is worsening. The bulge in her spine is pressing down dangerously and if she doesn’t get surgery within days, she may never be able to walk again. For the past 15 days, Surajit and Rupa have been in Bangalore, desperately trying to find a way to fund Shreya’s treatment. 

"I still owe 2 lakhs from her last surgery five years ago. How will I arrange 24 lakhs in mere days?" Surajit’s voice was heavy with exhaustion

A sister’s innocent dream - ‘When will she walk with me?’

Back in Burdwan,10-year-old Sayantika waits eagerly for her little sister to return and every day asks her Ma and Baba - "When will you bring her home? When will she walk with me?"
