“Why can’t I go to school like didi? Why don’t I have hair anymore? Why do I have to keep coming to the hospital?” Little Kaivalya has many questions for her parents, Shekhar and Ujwala Bhoir. As she spends most of her days in and out of the hospital, getting chemotherapy or numerous blood tests, the 5-year-old doesn’t understand why her life suddenly changed overnight.
“She loves going to school and keeps asking me when we will get her a new dress for school. My wife and I keep reassuring her. She’s a very smart girl and listens to everything we say. But when she’s constantly poked with needles, she cries so much that all our words and hugs fall short. All we want is for her to have her childhood back. But for that, she needs to fight blood rare condition.” - Shekhar Bhoir, father
They Never Imagined That Their 5-Year-Old Would Have To Fight To Stay Alive
Shekhar and Ujwala will never forget that day in February when they were told their younger daughter has Acute Leukemia, a life-threatening disease that requires urgent treatment.
“As soon as I heard the word rare condition, I went blank. I couldn’t hear the other words the doctor was saying anymore. Everything around me was a blur. I can’t explain how shocked we both were. We couldn’t believe that our Kaivalya who was playing and active just a few days ago, was now battling such a dangerous disease.” - Ujwala Bhoir, Mother
A mild fever, lack of appetite and fatigue - Kaivalya struggled with these three symptoms for 4-5 days before blood tests revealed that her condition was far more serious than anyone had imagined. As soon as the parents were told about the course of treatment, chemotherapy, they started calling people they knew.
“We knew it would cost a lot of money, and we didn’t have much with us. My brother helped us a lot by borrowing from people. I sold the little jewellery that I had and somehow managed to start her treatment. We are in debt now, but she still has more rounds of chemotherapy left. After spending over 10 lakhs already, I don’t know how we’re going to afford more.” - Ujwala
The Few Hundreds He Makes Isn’t Enough To Save His Daughter’s Life
Shekhar has been working as much as he can to support his family. Between staying with his daughter in the hospital, running around to get medicines and driving his auto to earn a few hundred a day, he’s exhausted. But he’s not one to give up. And neither is Ujwala. They have seen children recover and go back home, and they pray for just that for their daughter.
“Initially it was a very isolating feeling. But the more time we spent in the hospital, the more children and parents we met who were going through what we are. We saw children going back home, healthy. We saw parents not giving up. That gave us strength and hope that our Kaivalya too can make it. But only with some support.” - Shekhar
What Shekhar earns is just not enough to continue his daughter’s treatment. She needs continued chemotherapy and they can only afford it with your support.
Shekhar and Ujwala can get their bubbly, talkative child back from the clutches of rare condition with your help.
