These are unprecedented times. The number of people suffering are only increasing with each passing day. With the sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in India, there’s immense pressure on our country’s healthcare workers and the system. By now we’ve all seen appeals from people and our healthcare workers, asking us to stay at home and telling us about the severity of the current situation. It’s nothing short of heartbreaking.
A severe shortage of medical equipment and supplies have caused thousands of deaths outside hospitals and the need for sanitizers, masks and medicines have only increased. There are also a number of people struggling to get by without any food or help. This is the need of the hour.
The NGO, Goonj, is determined to do their bit to help fight the second wave in India. Started in 1999 by Anshu Gupta, Goonj offers a sustainable economic model for eliminating poverty and related issues. Goonj created a barter between urban surplus and village communities labor, triggering large scale rural development work.Using the city’s discard, Goonj is fueling widespread development work across villages India. It has built a network of channels from urban to village India, channelising clothes and other household material to reach people in the most far flung areas.
Since the beginning of the pandemic last year, Goonj has been fighting to help those affected the most - the marginalised communities who are living in slums and are in dire poverty. They’ve been providing these families with grocery kits and were able to help thousands.
This year, Goonj wants to help all those who are struggling to access essential medical supplies. This includes PPE kits, oximeters, digital thermometers, gloves, sanitisers, medicines, and masks. They also want to distribute grocery kits to those in need so that they can get by during these tough times.

About the NGO:
Since 1999, Goonj has built a network of communities from urban to village India, channelizing material as a tool to address crucial gaps in rural infrastructure, water, environment, livelihood, education, health, disaster relief and rehabilitation. Its engagement with both the urban and rural population has galvanized a mass civic participation in addressing basic but neglected issues. They’ve played an important role in supporting marginalized communities throughout the pandemic, and want to continue helping them during this second wave.
