The Holy City Of Varanasi Is Being Destroyed By Floods, Help The People Survive This Crisis

Project
On the banks of the Ganges lies the city of Varanasi - one of the oldest cities in the world, and one of the holiest pilgrimage sites among the Hindus. Varanasi, also called Banaras or Kashi, is home to thousands of temples where numerous religious festivals are celebrated with much fervour. The city is also known for its vibrant arts, crafts, dance and music, and is also famous for its production of silk. The ghats are filled with those offering their prayers, washing away their sins or performing the last rites of their loved ones. Such is the significance of Varanasi.
Unfortunately, this very city is in extreme danger today. With the rising water levels of the Ganges due to incessant rains in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi has been flooded and the situation is only getting worse with every passing minute.
The Floods Can Destroy Thousands Of Lives
The state government has started rescue operations in 15 flood affected areas in Uttar Pradesh, with Varanasi being among the worst affected so far. Boats and medical teams have been deployed, along with the National Disaster Response Force.
River Ganga continues to rise every hour and has crossed the danger mark. The water level of the Ganga is currently at 71.53m - a dangerous sign. While the numbers are yet to be confirmed, thousands are left marooned and in fear. To them, this is reminiscent of the 2013 floods when several people woke up to water in their houses at midnight due to the floods.
Several ghats like Marnikarnika Ghat have been submerged under water, while 150 homes are feared to face the same plight in Maruti Nagar Colony and Gayatri Nagar of Samne Ghat area. Several homes at Konia, Nakkhi Ghat etc have been flooded, leaving hundreds of people at risk of losing everything - even their lives. The need of the hour is to ensure the people of Varanasi get all the help they need.
