When we think of the word ‘innovation’, we often think of all the new developments around us - from contactless payment and new features on our mobile phones to home appliances and delivery services. And when we think of ‘innovators’, we can’t help but think of city dwellers with access to resources. However, innovations also happen in the smallest, remotest corners of our country, and innovators are also farmers from rural India. The difference is the lack of access they have to bring their products to the market to sell.
The Telangana State Innovation Cell (TSIC) was started in 2017 under the State Innovation Policy to promote the culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the state. One of their main aims is to help these grass-root innovators in rural Telangana bring their products to the market. The Innovation Cell is headed by the Chief Innovation Officer, Ravi Narayan. The team also includes 6 fellows who work towards nurturing young talent, foster Innovation, and Entrepreneurship in the State. They strive every day to empower and uplift the farmers in Telangana.
There’s little we know of innovators from rural areas, but their stories are plenty, and their innovations, unique. Whether it’s the farmer in Telangana who built a cotton plucker with a vacuum pump and scrap material, the farmer who created a wood chopping machine using a cycle, or the one who made a herbal weedicide, they all have something in common - all their innovations are low-cost and were created out of need.
These farmers use eco-friendly resources and build products that help not only them but also the community at large. However, they face many hurdles along the way. They don’t have the means or the support to continue building these products, let alone bringing them to the market to sell them.
TSIC wants to continue its mission of supporting these innovators. But this time, they need your help. TSIC wants to give their innovators the resources they need to build their products. With your support, these farmers will get the materials they need to create their innovations and TSIC will then be able to help bring them to the market.
