Varanasi, a city known for its deep religious and cultural significance, is battling severe floods. The water levels in the Ganga have risen dangerously, submerging famous temples like Tarkeshwar Mahadev Mandir, Namo Ghat, Lalita Gauri Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, Assi Ghat, and Ratneshwar Mahadev Mandir. All 84 ghats have been engulfed by the non-stop rains, cutting off connectivity.
Sleepless nights for low-lying areas
People in low-lying areas are terrified as the Ganga and Yamuna's water levels continue to rise. Water has reached the alleys and roads, forcing the cremation of bodies brought to the Harishchandra and Manikarnika ghats to take place in nearby streets and on terraces. The Ganga is showing its dangerous side.
Heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bundelkhand have caused water from the Ken, Betwa, and Chambal rivers, along with more than half a dozen smaller rivers, to flood into the Yamuna. Water was also released from the Matatila and Bariyarpur dams. Nearly 8 lakh cusecs of water from dams, barrages, and rivers reached Prayagraj in just 24 hours on Tuesday and Wednesday. The famous Hanuman Mandir in Prayagraj has also been submerged.
The heavy flooding has affected the community severely
The streets of Salori, Baghada, Mau Kachar, and Ganga Nagar in Prayagraj are underwater, disrupting traffic in Naini, Jhunsi, Baghada, and Daraganj. Over three thousand boatmen in Prayagraj are affected by the rising waters. Boating and cruises have been completely stopped, leaving boatmen without income and struggling to support their families during these rainy months.
Sadhus, pilgrims, and small businessmen who rely on the ghats for their livelihood have been severely affected. Their life depends on selling goods on the ghats, and now they face the grim reality of being unable to feed their families. Sadhus, who have lost their places of rest and food, will go hungry for days.
