Every noon, as the rickshaw pulls into their lane and the sound of the horn fills the air, all the dogs come running behind, wagging their tails. Because, inside the rickshaw is their favourite human being, their mother: 60-year-old Malan. The moment she steps out, they are all over her; hugging her, licking her and telling her just how glad they are that she came, again. Whispering loving words to them, she feeds them all to their heart’s content.

From 2 pm to 11 pm every day, Malan travels 60 Kms to feed 400 stray animals

For the last 15 years, Malan has made it her life’s mission to feed the strays. She wakes up at 5, cooks their food till noon, and sets out in her rickshaw to feed 300 dogs and 100 cats every day.

“If I don’t show up, they will go for the garbage bins. Hunger blinds them, and they bite into everything: broken tube lights, shattered glass, needles. They get hurt. Some even die. It’s heartbreaking. There are millions of hungry animals out there, and I have only reached 400 of them. I will rest when I know they are all fed.” - Malan, Founder, Animal Mom Foundation.

Cast aside by her own family, Malan has made these animals her family

Ever since she started feeding the animals, people around her have called her names, hurled abuses, and even cut ties with her. But nothing could deter her from serving the strays.

“They say I stink of animals, and that I look like one. My foundation’s name came from their very abuses. They would call me “Jaanvaron ki maa”, and I decided there’s no title more honourable than that. The strays are my family now.”

With growing costs, Malan is struggling to continue her mission

Malan lives in a chawl in Mumbai. Apart from a roof over her head and the rickshaw that she still pays EMI for, she has nothing to call her own. Her finances are scarce, and she needs your support.

“I’m no longer able to afford the cost of groceries, even for the 400 I feed every day. And I want to build a safe space for the injured animals. I have paid the deposit in a building, but I can’t afford the monthly rent. With your help, I can provide food and shelter to these hungry, voiceless beings.”
