“We were on our way to the office when we saw a young girl by the side of the road. She seemed intellectually challenged and was unable to say even a word about herself. We looked at her and she was scared. My husband and I couldn’t leave her alone like this and brought her home. She started staying with us and became a part of our family. Shobha and Uttam, however, had to send the girl to a better-equipped and more resourceful place where she could undergo speech therapy and would be able to live a much better life. But the couple sensed a void once she was gone. They realised that the only way this void could be filled is if they pledge to help many more children in need. And that was the start of the Spandana Society in Hyderabad. Spandana - a home for abandoned children Spandana operates with the motto of “helping others in need to help themselves”, with a specific focus on education, livelihoods, and skills development integrating health and legal remedies that are aimed at the better quality of life for children, women, and youth from the backward communities in rural and urban areas of Telangana, India. ![]()
“These are children who are unwanted in their own families either their parents have passed away or they have mental disabilities. They are left on the roads to fend for themselves. Some of them take to substance abuse as well. We want to provide all of them a safe and happy home.”Shobha and Uttam provide a holistic approach towards development for their children. The couple, who are well-versed in social work and hold a degree in the same, don’t differentiate between their own children and the ones at their shelter home. They give them the best of everything and wish for them to stand on their own feet one day. They now cater to 100+ orphaned children in their home. ![]()
However, they need your help to fulfill their mission Shobha and Uttam never hesitated to spend their savings for the welfare of their children. But the last two years have been tough and donations have been reduced to nothing because of the difficult times we are in. But the couple is not ready to compromise on the quality of life for the residents of the shelter home. “With your help, we will be able to give them healthy, nutritious meals, stationery for their education and bed sheets. These kids deserve a happy and comfortable life and your support can help us fulfil our dreams.” ![]()
Hundreds of children will get a second chance at life and will finally be able to live a life of happiness.
