Project
“A few months ago, a 4-month-old baby girl from Jabalpur was abandoned by her father after he found out about her disorder. Her mother had passed away, and she had no one to look after her. Only a few months into this world, and the baby had suffered through so much already. It broke my heart. But today, she has a safe home here with us. However, this is not the story of one baby. There are hundreds of children with disabilities who are abandoned and left to fend for themselves.” - Neelam Parmar, Co-founder, Santvan Viklang Vikas Mandal
Santvan Viklang Vikas Mandal is a home for children and adults with disabilities that was started in 2012 in Junagadh, Gujarat. Sisters Neelam and Rekha Parmar’s mission is to give these people a life filled with love, care, and respect. From A Very Young Age, Neelam Wanted To Help OthersNeelam was born with a severe disability that left 80% of her body paralyzed. This not only came with physical challenges, but a lot of mockery and taunts from others around her - whether it was her family or neighbours, Neelam experienced a lot of discrimination.
“But I don’t blame anyone. All I knew was that I wanted to help people like me. In 2009 when we had gone to Rajasthan for my surgeries, I saw so many people in the hospital who were suffering, and my sister and I did little things to help them. That’s when we realized that this was our calling - to support those who need it the most.” Santvan Viklang Vikas Mandal looks after people with cerebral palsy, autism, down syndrome and other intellectual and physical disabilities. Neelam and Rekha ensure that all their needs are taken care of - whether it’s food, education, shelter or medical treatment. The NGO follows a daily routine for all the residents, who even have dance sessions and art and craft activities. This home is truly a place for them to learn and grow in an environment where they feel secure, and with people who love them for who they are.
The NGO currently looks after 50+ children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities - many of whom have been abandoned by their families. A staff of 15 devotedly look after them day and night.
However, They’re Facing Challenges
Neelam and Rekha are so dedicated to the cause that they even take turns staying up all night with residents who need that extra care.
“Every person here has different needs, and it’s our responsibility to ensure that these needs are met. However, the pandemic has made it difficult for us to look after them. My sister and I have used our savings so far and have received help from donors as well, but with the pandemic, we haven’t been able to receive the same support. We need your help to get grocery kits, medicines and diapers for our residents here.”These essential items will allow them to continue giving their residents three fresh meals and a healthy, comfortable life of dignity.Your support will give people with disabilities a better life.
