Help Feed Stray Dogs on the Marina Beach in Chennai

    Project

It’s been well over five months since the nationwide lockdown was imposed. While we struggled with the supply of groceries, sources of income and tackling life at home, animals marveled at the empty roads and closed shops. Little did they fathom about the pandemic, prolonged absence of humans on the streets, and lack of food and water.

After two months, the lockdown was relaxed. People began leaving home. Many shops and restaurants opened their shutters as well. And yet, life was far from being normal. Strays roaming about on the roads still suffered from starvation and extreme thirst. Their feeders were still afraid of coming out. Most eateries had yet to open for business. And with people confined to their homes, the road-side food stalls had no reason to resume either.

Where could these innocent, voiceless animals go for help? They didn’t know. They still don’t.

The Marina Beach in Chennai is the longest beach in India and the second longest in the world. Hundreds of stray dogs live here. Before lockdown, they’d survive on the food scraps available outside the road-side stalls and eateries along the beach. However, now they’ve practically no source of food and water.

Owing to the rising number of cases, in Chennai, the lockdown was stretched for a long time. It was only after July 5 that a few relaxations were made available. Even now most restaurants and food stalls near the beach are closed. Such an adverse situation has left the strays struggling for survival. Unlike us, they cannot speak for themselves, they cannot ask for help. That results in their silent, painful surrender to death.

Can we do nothing to save them? To help them survive until the situation is much better?

People For Cattle in India (PFCI), our NGO Partner has been working towards animal welfare and prevention of animal cruelty for the last 8 years. During the Coronavirus pandemic, their aim has been to provide the strays with food and care. Their team has been feeding over 1200 strays dogs at the Marina Beach and other places of Chennai. With your help and support, they can ensure regular meals for these poor animals during this tough time.

The strays need you. They’ve always been kind and helpful to humans. It’s time we showed that we care for them too. The dry dog food will enable PFCI to feed them everyday. Please donate to save their lives.
