“Hungry, thirsty, tired, injured, broken, drugged, beaten and abused, when an animal dies at the hands of people who earn profit from them, humanity is put to shame. These animals can’t fight for themselves, they can’t stop the humans from hurting them, but the pain that they go through is incomparable. They’re drugged, beaten, burdened beyond their capacities, and often just thrown from hills when they become incapable of serving their owners. Food, water and veterinary care is a luxury not afforded to these animals. Would you still turn a blind eye to their suffering?” - Gauri Maulekhi, Founder Trustee Member Secretary, PFA Uttarakhand.

People For Animals, Uttarakhand is part of the larger network of People For Animals, India - a non-governmental organization that is working tirelessly to care for animals in need. Gauri and her team have been vocal about the atrocities of horses, mules, donkeys, poultry birds, and other animals who are exploited and abused for commercial purposes, in tourist destinations and in our towns and cities.  They have saved thousands of innocent lives in the last ten years, but much more needs to be done.

Flogged, drugged, and overworked till their last breath, these animals die the most painful death

Newspapers have consistently reported about the horrific treatment meted out to working animals at hill stations and other tourist attraction sites. Every year thousands of mules and horses die and tens of thousands are severely injured in several tourist places, especially on the hills.People For Animals Uttarakhand runs the only Equine Sanctaury in Uttarakhand that is a ray of hope for these animals.

“When tourist places opened after 2 long years due to the pandemic, the handlers and the owners could only think about their business. As a result, despite there being several restrictions, these animals were overburdened and taken for multiple trips up the steep mountains on a single day. We have received complaints of them being beaten mercilessly or even drugged when they were unable to continue trudging along the path. We work with the authorities now to take action against al cruelty cases and we have created a safe sanctuary to house the disabled, broken equines that are finally rescued. ”

Gauri explains that these owners make zero effort to look after the dietary and medical needs of the working animals. They’re made to work till they can’t and then when their health deteriorates, these horses and mules are left to die so that the insurance sum can be obtained. Unlike dogs and cats, equines are unable to fend for themselves and an abandoned equine always ends up dying a slow and painful death.

Established in 2012, Happy Home Sanctuary in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, is the state’s first and only no-cage, no-tie sanctuary that houses equines, hens, goats, sheep, and cats who have been rescued from abuse or abandonment. Currently, they’re home to around 85 equines and they rescue at least 2-3 every month. Here, they’re given a proper diet, necessary medical treatment, and most importantly, the love and safety to recuperate after years of facing brutalities.

End the suffering of these innocent animals - donate now to save them

“While we do our best to take care of the equines in our sanctuary there are so many out there who need our help. The only way we can take care of more and more working animals is with your support. I request you all to come forward and donate generously for these sentient beings who have only known pain until now.”

A little awareness can go a long way and a little generosity can change the lives of countless horses, mules, donkeys, cats and hens who are being abused and mistreated. Donate animal food and medicines now and create a world of difference.
