“We used to carry around 60 kgs of goal and walk for 7 km to earn Rs. 60 rupees. That was how we fed our families. Now, we’re not getting even that. The coronavirus second wave has left us with nothing - no food or job. Even if we get some rice and salt, we can survive. How long can we survive on just air?” - a coal miner in Dhanbad, JharkhandThousands of families in and around Dhanbad survive by working as coal miners. As dangerous as it is, it’s their only source of income. They carry heavy weights and climb great heights, and after all that hard work, they would earn barely enough to feed themselves and their children. Today, amidst the second wave, they’re all sleeping on an empty stomach.Nand Care Foundation Is Empowering The Coal Miners Of DhanbadStarted by Deepak Kumar, Nand Care Foundation has been working towards the betterment of the coal miners and tribal communities in and around Dhanbad for over five years now. They have been monumental in providing education to the children of coal miners and supporting these families over the years.During the pandemic, they have distributed grocery kits among 10000 family in coal miners community and tribal community. Their food distribution drive has had a tremendous impact on the community, and now, they want to continue helping thousands of coal miners survive the second wave.

They’re Struggling Without FoodLocals of Dhanbad often complain of persistent coughs, headaches and health conditions such as tuberculosis, asthma and other respiratory diseases caused due to the nature of their job. Explosions, landslides and collapsing mines are common as they put their lives at risk every single day. Despite all the work they do, selling coal is a huge task. Families walk long distances every day just to be able to sell some coal. The coal miners have no respite. However, for them, their biggest challenge continues to be hunger.Their fight to get even a single meal in a day has only been amplified by the second wave.“They’re so helpless and hungry that they don’t even ask us for vegetables or dal anymore. All they say is give us some rice so that we can make it the next day. Their plight is truly heartbreaking. We want to do everything we can to help them during these difficult times. But we can’t do it alone.” - Deepak Kumar, Founder, Nand Care FoundationHow You Can HelpNand Care Foundation needs your help to give thousands of coal miners and tribals grocery kits so that they can cook meals for their families and survive. Your contributions will ensure that their children don’t go to bed hungry any longer.
