    Project

There are thousands of women farmers in India who are not accounted for as farmers at all. Many of these women put in laborious work for over 8-10 hours in the scorching heat.

However, the women who work on farms are not characterized as farmers at all. Today, many of the women farmers struggle with debt, produce, harvest, loans, and a lot of other issues while cultivating their farms.

According to NCRB, as many as 3,53,803 farm suicides have taken place between 1995 and 2018 across the country. 85.81% of the deceased were male farmers, indicating that around 50,188 female farmers had ended their lives in this period.

Today, in 2020, there are lakhs of women farmers who come from families where their husbands have committed suicide. Many of them couldn’t handle the loss or have been ridden by debt.

These women who have been left behind have no source of livelihood. They’re left to fend for themselves without a direction or mentor to guide them.

"Even if they don't want to, sometimes women are forced to borrow loans by the family, says Jyothi, gently, sitting on a pile of clothes along a wall of exposed brick.

Sometimes, these women have no other choice but to borrow large sums of money in the hope of reaping a harvest. However, it’s rather depressing that their harvest depends on the fate of the monsoon.

Back in 2016, the idea of Millgro was born when Mr Raya attended a local Agricultural university. The scale of farmer suicides in the country, especially in the state of Telangana empowered him to do something to help the women farmers who’ve lost their spouses.

The name MIllgro comes from “growth through millets”. At Millgro, they source millets from the women farmer-beneficiaries and then make Millet Cookies. These millet cookies are nutritious, have high fibre, low sugar and no preservatives. Part of the profits from selling these millet cookies also goes towards the welfare of the women farmer-beneficiaries. At Millgro, the beneficiaries are identified through their NGO partner - Aranya.

You can help these women farmers have a better income - resulting in a stable life. You can help give thousands of orphaned and challenged children a nutritious life.

The millet cookies that you donate to are distributed the millet cookies to help children with disabilities, orphaned children and to the patients and their families in government hospitals.

Donate a pack of millet cookies to help the farmer widows and to help children have a better life.

One solution. Double the change. Double the impact.
