Help Us Save Our Premature Twins – They’re Fighting for Every Breath
“In my mind, I had imagined so many times how my husband and I would carry one baby each and take them home for the first time. I had imagined that we would be so overwhelmed and consumed with joy that we wouldn’t be able to say a word to each other. But today, we are consumed by grief and fear. Three weeks after their birth, we still have not taken them home. They are in the NICU, fighting for their lives…” - Sonali, mother of the twins, breaks down.
After six years of yearning for a child, the couple turned to IVF
In a small village on the outskirts of Nashik, Manoj and Sonali lived all by themselves, hoping that one day their house would echo with their baby’s cries and laughter. When the doctors said Sonali wouldn't be able to become pregnant naturally, their world came to a standstill. IVF seemed to be their only way forward. Pouring their hopes and savings into the procedure, they embarked on the journey.
“I was scared it would lead to disappointment again. But Sonali was hopeful. She endured everything with a smile.” - Manoj Annasaheb, father
When they became pregnant, their joy knew no bounds. But…
Before long, their prayers were answered, and they were pregnant with twins. They thought bad luck was finally leaving them. But at the end of her 7th month, everything changed again.
“Her BP dropped too low, and she had to have an emergency C-section to avoid risk to both her and our babies’ lives. She gave birth to the babies when she was barely 8 months pregnant. I was relieved she was safe…but the babies…” - Manoj looks away.
Born extremely preterm, the twins are fighting for their life
Sonali gave birth to a boy and a girl, both of whom weighed less than 1.5 Kg at birth. With their organs still underdeveloped, the babies are in the NICU, undergoing treatment.
“Till six days after my surgery, I couldn’t see them. When I did, my heart broke. They were alone, crying. I couldn’t console them. I can only see them for a few hours every day. But if this separation means they will live a long life, I can take it…” - Sonali breaks down
The twins need prolonged treatment, but it costs over 8 lakh rupees
Doctors have recommended that the babies stay in the NICU till their organs are fully developed and they are out of risk. The stay, inclusive of the treatment and medication, will cost 8.5 lakh rupees. But Manoj, the sole breadwinner of their family, can't afford it. As a shop assistant in his village, he earns 8,000 rupees a month. He is in desperate need of your help.
