Meri is the eldest of her siblings. She and her two sisters lived and studied together in a hostel, whereas her parents toiled the land and saved every penny possible to educate their girls. Meri had just entered Class 10. She was determined to study hard and build a better future for her family. But when she suddenly developed a high fever at the hostel, her parents were called to take her home.

What they hoped would be a simple seasonal flu, turned out to be a life-threatening disease- Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a severe form of blood cancer.

Weak and pale, barely able to stand

“When we brought her home, she had a high fever and could barely stand. With each passing day, Meri grew weaker, pale, and unable to even go to the washroom on her own.” - Miru, mother

For months, the family travelled from one hospital to another, trying medicines, tests, and treatments. Meri’s blood count kept dropping, and she needed frequent blood transfusions just to stay stable. It wasn’t until they reached a larger hospital in Bangalore that the doctors discovered what was really happening. Meri needs chemotherapy to survive, and the treatment will cost the family 8 lakh rupees.

Living in the Hospital, Holding on to Hope

The family has no place to stay in the unknown city. Miru sleeps beside Meri in the hospital bed, while Pradeep, her father, sleeps in corridors or waiting areas, with only a thin cloth to cover himself. They eat only after feeding Meri, stretching whatever borrowed money remains.

“The doctors say she is responding well. If we can just continue the treatment, she will recover. But we don’t have any money left. We had saved to educate our daughters, but all our savings, nearly everything we had, were spent just reaching this point. Now we don’t know how to continue.” - Pradeep, father

Farmer parents need your help to save her

Meri is old enough to understand everything. Sometimes she cries quietly, while her parents give her courage and hope that she’ll be better soon with the treatment. But that very treatment, these parents cannot afford.

“We are merely small farmers in a village, earning sixty thousand rupees a year. Our income is not nearly enough to complete her treatment and take her home. We don’t know what else to do now. Please help us.” - Miru, mother
