8YO Hatu’s Liver Failed. Only You Can Support Him
“Your child’s liver has completely failed…he will need a transplant to survive. The surgery will cost about Rs 21 lakhs”
After 5 days of constant monitoring, this one sentence by the doctors shattered Santosh and Sumita’s world.
“We just stared at the doctor. We thought it was just a seasonal fever. His eyes turned yellow and pale. We gave him warm water, kept him wrapped in a blanket…we are still unable to grasp all this meant his organ was failing.”- Sumita, mother
What makes everything harder is that 8-year old Hatu heard the conversation
He didn’t understand the medical terms, only one word - ‘operation’.
Since then, Hatu clings to his mother’s hand every time a nurse walks in and pulls his bedsheet up to his face.
“Maa…please take me home. I don’t want an operation. I’ll be good. I won’t get sick again. I just want to watch IPL match with my Dada” - Hatu
Tutu’s condition keeps worsening as his tiny body is unable to handle these symptoms
On Diwali evening, while other children burst crackers in the lane, Hatu was unusually quiet. He had developed a fever which stayed high. His energy dropped. By the next day, his eyes had started to turn yellow.
At first, the family thought it was jaundice - something treatable. But on the third day when his skin turned yellow too, and he began vomiting everything he tried to eat, they rushed him to the hospital.
Everything changed in 5 days when his liver began failing
Doctors ran multiple blood tests and scans. Tutu cried through the needles, asking repeatedly, “Is this the last one? Can we go home after this?”
The doctor explained how acute liver failure can strike suddenly - a fever that seems harmless can sometimes trigger a chain reaction the body cannot fight.
The sickness is changing him daily. His stomach is swollen from fluid retention. His skin is an unsettling shade of yellow. He sleeps most of the day, too exhausted to speak.
The doctors say he doesn’t have much time. They need to act fast as time is slipping
Santosh and Sumita together earn around Rs.30,000 a month. They have already spent nearly Rs.2-3 lakhs, everything they managed to save over their few years of marriage - gone in days on tests, injections, hospitalizations and medicines.
“If Hatu gets this transplant…it won’t just save him. It will save us too. Hatu doesn’t understand liver transplants, failure rates, medical urgency, numbers, the reports, the fear. He only wants one thing - to go back home and watch cricket with his Dada again.”- Santosh, father
