Priyanka and Rahul were going to be parents for the very first time. Their excitement knew no bounds, and the entire family looked forward to welcoming their newest member. But, during the sixth month of pregnancy, Priyanka's body swelled up abnormally. Her blood pressure was dangerously high, putting both her life and the baby’s at risk.

“I got a call from the hospital, asking me to make a decision. They said my wife needed an emergency delivery. It was only the 6th month of pregnancy, way too early for anything to happen, and it scared me to death.” - Rahul Patil, father

The parents haven’t held their baby even once

Doctors immediately performed an emergency cesarean section to save Priyanka and the baby. Their son was born extremely premature, weighing just 840 grams. His lungs were underdeveloped, and he struggled to breathe from the moment he was born. He was rushed straight to the NICU and put on ventilator support, with feeding through a tube.

“Right after our baby was born, he was taken to the ICU.  It’s been over a month, and neither of us has seen his face properly. We watch through the glass door, and all we can see are tubes and machines around his tiny body. ” - Rahul, father

Parents torn between work and fear

Priyanka spends her days sitting in the hospital waiting area, hoping for the moment a nurse might call her in to see her baby up close. As a new mother, the pain of not being able to hold her child is unbearable. Rahul, meanwhile, has returned to the farm. With no irrigation system, his crops depend entirely on rain, and recent rains have destroyed most of their cotton yield. Still, he cannot afford to stop working.

“Every time someone walks out of the NICU, I hope they will call my name. I wish I could hold him in my arms just once. My husband can’t even see our child from afar, he has to be at the farm, or we won’t be able to afford anything for the rest of the year. He is away, but his heart is here. I just want to take my baby home safe and healthy.” - Priyanka

Farmer father struggles to afford the cure

The baby needs prolonged NICU and supportive care for a few more weeks to recover. He needs to gain weight and needs treatment to fully develop his lungs, but the cost of the entire treatment- 8 Lakh rupees, is something these parents cannot afford. For a farming family that earns barely enough to survive the year, this amount feels impossible.

“We manage the entire year’s expenses with what we earn from one crop. How do we even think about lakhs? I feel so helpless.”- Rahul

This tiny newborn is fighting for his life before he has even seen the world properly. His parents can only watch from a distance, praying that their child survives this fragile phase.
