Daily Wage Labourer Struggles To Give His Child A Normal And Healthy Life
“Our son was active since the beginning. He would run around all day and yet have the energy to play with me when I returned from work. But soon after he turned 3, he started losing weight. He became so thin that nothing was left of him except for bones. His stomach would ache, and he would cry inconsolably. But we never knew he was suffering from a life-threatening disease.”- Chandan Namadas, father
He vomited blood and was rushed to the hospital
Ashish started losing weight rapidly, and soon his frail body weighed only 9.5 kg- less than even a one-year-old child. Local doctors in Guwahati said it was just a nutritional deficiency and prescribed medicines. But instead of getting better, Ashish’s stomach began to swell, and one day he even vomited blood. That’s when his parents, Chandan and Sachirani, knew something was terribly wrong.
“The day he vomited blood, my hands went numb,” recalls Chandan. “I didn’t know how to hold him or what to do. We rushed him to the hospital, and after all tests, they told us his liver was failing. At that moment, I felt like the ground had slipped away from under my feet.”
Local doctors asked the parents to take Ashish to Bangalore
They sold their only land just to get to Bangalore
Local doctors asked the parents to take Ashish to Bangalore for advanced care. But the journey was impossible without money.
“How can a 3-year-old have a failing liver? It was beyond our understanding. But when doctors told us that he needed an urgent transplant and that we might lose him without it, we just… we just had to do everything possible to get him cured. But we didn’t even have the money to reach Bangalore.” -Chandan, father
Ever since Ashish fell sick, Chandan hasn’t been to work. Day and night, he and Sachirani have been running between hospital wards to get their little boy treated. With no income to even put food on the table, the couple had to sell their only piece of land- the only security they had in life.
Mother gave away her liver to save her son
When doctors confirmed that his mother was a suitable donor, Sachirani didn’t hesitate. “When they told me I could save my child, I felt relieved rather than scared. I told them, take whatever part of me you need, but please save my child.”- Sachirani, mother
Thanks to her sacrifice and support from a government scheme, the transplant was carried out. But the fight is far from over. Ashish now needs ₹6 lakh for post-operative care. Without this, he cannot recover and return home.
“The surgery is done, but every day I see him weak and struggling. I want him to run, laugh, and play like other children, not stay confined to a hospital bed. But there is treatment left without which I can’t take my child home.” Sachirani
‘I haven’t been to work in 5 months, and each day is a struggle’
“I haven’t been to work in five months. Each day is a struggle. We are treating our child on borrowed money. Ashish just wants to go home, and his sister waits to play with him. We can’t answer their questions… all we can do is hope that with people’s help, we can take him home healthy one day.”- Chandan, father
These parents are in desperate need of help. Your contributions can help them reach their goal in time and give their child a second chance at life.
