Help Sonam Break Free from Pain and Shame
“Whoever helps, I will only pray for them and pray for their safety.” Sonam’s father, a humble farm labourer.
Sonam, a 23-year-old from Khirni village, has faced nothing but hardship since she was two years old. What started as a little boil on her face quickly spread throughout her body, damaging one of her eyes. Doctors diagnosed her with Upper Limb Neurofibromatosis, a severe and unusual ailment that has taken away her childhood, confidence, and chance at a normal life.
A childhood stolen
Sonam was previously excited to attend school, but when her illness became known, she was met with mockery and rejection from her classmates. She stopped going to school after only 2-3 years because she couldn't stand the humiliation. Since then, her world has been limited to her house, where guilt and solitude continue to weigh heavily on her young shoulders.
Her mother sometimes cries, hurt by society's nasty questions: "Who will marry your daughter with her condition?".
A family struggling to survive
Sonam's father is a daily-wage labourer on farm fields, earning only ₹250 per day and facing job insecurity. Her mother, despite having diabetes, occasionally works as a worker to support the family.
The family attempted to stop the disease by spending ₹2-3 lakhs on treatments, but were unable to afford the recommended continual care. The sickness has now taken over Sonam's body. Her older brother has cut off relations with the family, and her older sister Komal, who is also unschooled, remains at home. Her parents worry about arranging her marriage and the money they'll need for it.
A chance at healing
At AIIMS, Delhi, the family was told that the whole treatment would cost about ₹10-12 lakhs, an impossible cost for a family struggling to put food on the table.
Recently, specialists in Rishikesh performed tests and suggested surgery. The family is seeking treatment at Panacea Hospital in Dehradun, where Sonam's surgery will cost approximately ₹7 lakhs. This is their sole hope of giving her a normal life.
Dreams of a Normal Life
Sonam dreams of going out into the world without fear, of having a life free of stares and hurtful insults. Her parents want to see her healthy, happy, and married. Living the basic, everyday life she deserves but has been denied.
Your support can help Sonam get the surgery she desperately needs. Your generosity not only funds her treatment but also provides her with dignity, confidence, and the opportunity to live without shame.
Please come forward to support Sonam. Together, we can combat neurofibromatosis and provide her with the future she deserves.
