Gattu Giri Works Tirelessly To Uplift The Mentally Challenged People Who’re Abandoned And Alone.

I have seen the stigma around mental illness with my own eyes since I was very young. My cousin was suffering from  a condition and he had to face a lot of hurdles. My house was ostracized in the village. People just didn’t understand that this is the time when they should show support. My cousin left our house and was found eating from the garbage one day. We brought him back but couldn’t save his life. That was the unfortunate moment when I decided to help these people in need,” - Gattu, Giri.

Mental illness is seen as some sort of taboo in our society. Kids are left on the streets, young adults have no choice but to be forced out of their homes and the senior citizens are just abandoned. Gattu Giri, the founder of Matrudevobhava Anadha Ashramam in Telangana has dedicated his life to serve these people for whom no one is willing to give a second thought about.

    How it all started

With sheer hard work and determination, Giri was able to establish his ashramam in 2017. Hailing from Samsthan Narayanpur, Yadadri district, Giri rescued his first inmate Shankar in the same area where his brother was found, and till date he is still residing in the ashramam. When asked how they track a particular mentally challenged person, Giri explained how the local police stations have been helping them. Whenever the police come across such intellectually challenged people in dire need of help, they inform Giri and his team.

We along with our volunteers go to that area and bring them, give them a haircut, shave and then give them new clothes etc. Then we take them to the Erragadda mental hospital. If they are able to tell us their address, we hand them over to their family. If they can’t, we keep them in our ashramam.”

You can help Giri’s ardent efforts

The Ashramam is now home to 100 abandoned souls who have no one in this world. With Giri’s dedication and help from other good samaritans, they have been able to rehabilitate 250+ people. They have given them a second chance at life when others consider them a  burden. However, Gattu Giri is now in need of help. He needs groceries, a care kit that consists of detergent, soap etc and an ambulance that will help them bring in many more people in need. Public transportation is not an option for Giri because people are not ready to allow these abandoned souls in their vehicles.

It is heart wrenching to see the condition in which these kids or elderlies come to our Ashramam. We want to give them the best of everything but now this is becoming more and more difficult. With your help, we are sure to reach out to many more in need.”

Let us all come forward to help Gattu Giri’s noble efforts and support all those who have been abandoned.
