Diwali is fast approaching and you can almost feel the excitement in the air. Even if the celebrations will be muted this year, Diwali is an important occasion of joy for millions of people and even a beacon of hope in this difficult time.

However, not everyone can afford to celebrate this year. Millions of people have lost their livelihoods and are struggling to just get by. This is especially bad in our cities, like Mumbai. Street vendors in Mumbai have had a debilitating year- first, the lockdown abruptly shut down their small businesses and now, even though business has restarted, they are unable to earn enough to feed their families.
These small street vendors are the life and soul of a city like Mumbai. They keep our cities running and provide hope for those aiming at a better life. They are hardworking and resourceful but the hardships of the pandemic might prove to be too much for them.
These street vendors usually make a bulk of their earnings during the festival season, especially Diwali. This year, they can’t even hope for that as celebrations move indoors and no one is really stepping out to make purchases at these small shops and stalls. Their already struggling livelihoods are on the brink of collapse.
Everyone deserves to experience the joy of Diwali. This year, MakingThe Difference (MTD), an NGO working with the poor and underprivileged, has come forward to provide a lifeline to street vendors in Mumbai. Previously, MTD has raised support to provide groceries to Dabbawalas and idol makers in Mumbai.
For Diwali, MTD needs your help to provide essential grocery kits to street vendors across Mumbai, especially the vendors near stations and markets who don’t have shops and are facing the worst consequences of the pandemic. With your help, they are aiming to provide food for at least 5000 to 10000 street vendors in the areas of Crawford Market, Fashion Street, Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, Goregaon, Miraroad, Bhayandar, Churchgate, Mohammad Ali Road, Andheri, etc.

Making the Difference was established in 2014 by Mr Meet Vishwakarma. It's an NGO formed with an aim to serve the needy & underprivileged communities. The NGO has been working relentlessly during this time of crisis to serve people from various sections of society. For this campaign, they have identified thousands of street vendors in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai who have been hit hard by the pandemic this year.
Voice of Slum
Voice of Slum is an NGO based in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Its mission is to assimilate street children into mainstream society by providing them with quality education, exposure and access to opportunities. The NGO is run by those born in slums, who have been through it all - Dev Pratap and Chandni Khan. They have been working relentlessly to provide essential items for survival to slum dwellers in Delhi NCR ever since the first lockdown was announced.
