As much as Mumbai is known for its beautiful spirit, kind people, and love, it’s also known for its bumper-to-bumper traffic. The city is filled with its narrow lanes, busy cars, and public buses. These dabbawalas took full control of delivering the lunch box or better known as the Dabba to the right person at the fixed lunch hour without any IT infrastructure or mobile phones.

The Dabbawalas who’re known for their legendary logistics system and their work ethic ride their bicycles through the narrow lanes and streets. They swerve through an army of cars, buses, and busy roads, carrying almost 30-35 lunchboxes. They dodge rain, sun, hail, and wade through knee-depth water to deliver these dabbas.

Nothing could ever break their grit, strength, and courage for the last 130 years. Until, the pandemic came about and kept them out of work. Thousands of men had to put down their white topi and had to go home empty handed.

Mumbai’s rain, the humidity and the climate played a heavy toll on their cycles. The chains are rusted, the wheels are worn down, and they’re in such a bad state that their wheels can hardly be turned.

These men had no work and the very little money they had saved was put into feeding their families. Today, they hardly have anything left to even repair their cycles.

If we can get new cycles, we can rise up again with the same spirit and show the whole of Mumbai that we are the same old dabbawalas and that nothing can break our passion”, said Kailash Shinde, a Mumbai dabbawala.

More than 1500 dabbawalas have lost their cycles during the pandemic. There’s nothing more precious than being given a second chance. It could be just a second chance for you, but for them, it’s a second chance at regaining their livelihood. At feeding their family and standing up for the truly amazing individuals they are.

Now, as things get better and as the city's wheels are turning back to its normalcy, it’s time to help them.

We urge you to come forward and give the dabbawalas a fighting chance at getting back their livelihood.

Give them their “Josh”. Donate a cycle, today.
