This Independence Day, Donate A School Bag And Help Educate Thousands Of Kids

One of our fondest Independence Day memories is that of the flag hoisting on our school ground, the parade by the school kids, the national anthem, and finally those ladoos that the teacher handed out to us. Every 15th of August, while we remember those days, the sight of a poor child selling a tiranga by the roadside jolts us back to reality. 

These young citizens of India can’t afford to go to school 

It’s been 75 long years since India got its independence from the colonizers. But, unfortunately, issues like poverty, hunger, and homelessness still plague the country. Countless children in India are still in no condition to go to school. In fact, they hardly have enough to eat - a proper education. While the Constitution of the land promises free and mandatory education to all children till 14 years of age, the reality at the grassroots level is seamy.

“It is sad when you see 5-6 year-olds working in a tea shack or selling pens by the roadside. And when we ask them if they want to go to school, they innocently ask us how will they carry their books - because, in place of a school bag, all they have are tatters and rags…” - an NGO worker working with slum children. 

The lack of basic amenities has been stopping countless children in India from getting a proper education. They are forced to live a life of sadness and pain, suffering and torture.
