Support Indramani & Save 300+ Kids From the Dangers of Jharkhand’s Mica Mines
Project
“When they go to the mica mines, the mothers tie their infants and kids to their back and take them along. But the mines are by the forest. The children are attacked by wolves or foxes, carried away by bears, or bitten by scorpions and snakes. If it is not the animals, exposure to toxic dust at the mines gets to them. The horrors are endless. What can the mothers do? They, too, are helpless.” – Indramani Sahu, Founder, Samarpan
In this part of the world, one must go down the mines to put food on the table
Living in Koderma in Jharkhand, an area with the highest number of mica mines, Indramani saw children his age head to the mines every day because they were too poor to afford a meal. He would see them covered in fine dust from head to toe and shudder when he heard dreadful news about the deaths of some of them.
“Mining was the main occupation here. My father worked at a factory that dealt with hand separation of mined mica. It was the only way he could put food on our table and educate us. Our family was lucky to not end up in the mines, but a lot of families weren’t. When children headed to the mines with little baskets in their hands, I remember feeling it was unfair that their childhood and basic rights were taken away from them. That’s how Samarpan came to be.” – Indramani Sahu, Founder, Samarpan
How could hands meant to hold books and toys scrape through dirt and mine for sharp-edged mica?
For the last 20 years, Indramani Sahu, along with his team and volunteers at Samarpan, has worked tirelessly to rescue children from the mica mines of Jharkhand. They have taken 50 villages under their care and are doing everything to ensure that the children are given a chance at education, to ensure that their rights and social entitlements are made known to them.
“In places like these, lack of education also means that they become victims of sexual abuse, child marriage, domestic abuse and human trafficking. “The problem begins when mothers take their babies into the mines because there’s nowhere safe to leave them. I believe this first exposure sets the tone for the rest of the child’s life. We are fighting to stop this because once they enter the mines, it is far harder to pull them out than to keep them away from the get-go.”
Help Samarpan build a safe space for over 300 children of the mica miners
“Imagine mothers taking their children to mines because there’s no safe space! Our goal is to build a place that can give these children a safe environment with nutritious food while the mothers can work for their livelihood. With your help we can change the lives of 300+
children for the better.”
With a little help from you, Samarpan can build fully functioning creches to improve the health and nutrition of children in these villages. They will provide proper meals and give them hope for a better tomorrow.
