Your Support Can Help Build A Shelter For Starving Sadhus & Pandits In Varanasi

    Project

Pandit Prithvi Nath Pande was only a young boy when he started reciting the Ramcharitmanas - an epic poem considered one of the greatest works of Hindu literature. Today, he has three children, and continues to recite the Ramcharitamanas at people’s homes during important festivals and also serves as a pandit at a temple in Varanasi. His wife helps in looking after the temple and the family lives on the premises, sleeping on the floor or on a bed made out of bricks. They lost their mud hut a few years ago, and ever since then, have been at the mercy of others’ kindness.

They live a simple life, but not an easy one by any means. They’re struggling to survive today.  The little that Pandit ji makes is barely enough to look after the family, let alone afford his medicines for his heart condition.

There Are Hundreds Of Sadhus & Pandits Who Continue To Suffer

Pandit ji along with Hope Welfare Trust wants to build a space for other sadhus and pandits who are left helpless and struggling to survive. There are many sadhus who travel from one holy place to another, and they want to ensure that these sadhus have a place to stay for as long as they are in Varanasi. Whether it's days or weeks.

“A plot has been given to pandit ji, and we want to support his mission of serving others in need. Here, they will be given food and shelter. Varanasi has a number of sadhus who rely on others’ kindness to survive. They still face many challenges like not getting enough food and often have no place at all to take shelter from the harsh sun or the bitter cold.” - Divyanshu Upadhyay, Secretary, Hope Welfare Trust

An initiative by youngsters with a will to bring about a change in the society, especially rural India, Hope Welfare Trust started as a nascent movement in Varanasi in September 2015. A few students from various universities and colleges joined hands with the aim to bring about sustainable development in rural Indian villages and involve women to play a key role.

Today, they have played an important role in helping thousands of sadhus, leprosy patients, people from the Dom community and others survive the crisis and beyond. From distributing meals to providing them blankets, the members of Hope Welfare Trust are doing everything they can to help.

“Pandit ji and his family have suffered a lot, and yet they remain so selfless. His temple is the second stop of the Panchkosi Parikrama, a significant festival where devotees pass through five great places in Varanasi. Despite struggling to even eat on some days, he continues to conduct pujas there. A roof over their heads will make a world of a difference to them. And we can help so many more sadhus too who come to Varanasi for refuge and prayer.”

You Can Help Make A Difference

While Hope Welfare Trust has done everything they can to begin the construction on the plot, they can’t continue it any further. They’ve used all their resources and now everything is at a standstill. Your contribution towards the construction material will allow them to build the shelter for sadhus and accommodate over 50 sadhus at once.

“The sadhus can come and leave as they wish, and we will do everything we can to give them a respectable and healthy life.”

Support Pandit ji and Hope Welfare Trust to give countless sadhus and pandits a better life.
