His Heart Cries For The Homeless, Help Somarajan Save Countless Abandoned Elderly

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

    Project

In the quaint village of Punalur, Kerala, Dr. Punalur Somarajan was born in 1955 to Chelappan and Sarada. Despite facing the hardships of poverty during his childhood, his determination to complete his education was unwavering.

“Growing up, I have always seen my father selflessly provide for the poor and needy despite our struggles. He has been my biggest source of inspiration. It was his compassion that instilled in me the desire to work for the underprivileged,” Dr. Punalur Somarajan, Founder, Gandhibhavan.

When Somarajan lost his mother at a young age, he decided to dedicate his life to extending a helping hand to those with no one. His mission - to obliterate the word 'orphan' from the vocabulary and embrace every soul with motherly love

Gandhibhavan is a beacon of hope for all those who have no one to look after them

A prolific writer and columnist with a keen interest in art and literature, Dr. Somarajan embarked on his journey of social work early on. Once when he was travelling, he met 85-year-old Parukuttiamma. Frail and ailing, this woman had no relatives or family. She was left on the streets to fend for herself. Parukuttiamma became the reason behind the establishment of Gandhibhavan in 2002

Situated on the serene banks of the Kallada River at Kundayam, near Pathanapuram in Kollam District, Kerala, Gandhibhavan started with just one resident. Today, Gandhibhavan is a loving home for 1500+ residents, including abandoned, mentally ill, bedridden, and terminally ill elderly individuals. The organization operates with the support of 300+ dedicated volunteers, doctors, and nurses. Offering a holistic approach, Gandhibhavan provides proper meals, medical and legal assistance, as well as yoga and music therapy, all inspired by Gandhian values

Every resident here has a heartbreaking story - each one of them has gone through pain and suffering. Finally, they have found solace in the safe environment of Gandhibhavan.

Dr. Somarajan talks of Ashokan, a 60-year-old Gulf expatriate from Attingal Kunnuvaram, who faced a series of setbacks when his wife left him, leaving him without family, home, or property. Desperate, the man decided to end his life. But timely intervention by firefighters saved him, albeit with a serious leg injury.

“He was admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and it was here that Dr. Manoj Kumar, the hospital's Superintendent figured that Ashokan needed constant love and care. That was how Ashokan came to our old age home. Today, after so many years, he has found a home and a family that has given him a newfound sense of happiness.”

Help Gandhibhavan empower many more lives with compassion, dignity, and love

Gandhibhavan's tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed. The organization has received numerous awards and recognitions at both state and national levels for its exemplary work with the elderly. However, as the number of residents continues to grow, so does the need for support. The challenges lie in the scarcity and unpredictability of donations, with over 3 lakhs being spent daily for their day-to-day operations.

We are in urgent need of groceries, medicines, and hygiene products. For over 20 years, we have been working very hard for all those who are poor and needy. With your support, we can do so much more. Your contributions are invaluable to us.”

Let us come together and ensure that Gandhibhavan's mission to care for the elderly continues to shine bright.
