“Benares is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend, and looks twice as old as all of them put together.”
That’s what the famous author Mark Twain said about Varanasi.
And throughout ages, the holy city of Varanasi has upheld its identity as the place where faith and culture intersect. The city is an important pilgrimage site due to the Kashi Vishwanath and other temples. Due to this, this city sees a huge influx of tourists, most of whom are saints or sadhus.
MahaKumbh and Maha Shivratri 2025
This year, the number of devotees will increase exponentially due to the grand festival of Maha Kumbh and Maha Shiva Ratri, coinciding. During these auspicious festivals, the city of Varanasi will see huge numbers of Sadhus from all over the country.
“These saints have given up material life and devoted themselves to the service of God. And they hesitate to ask for help even if they need it. So we have decided to provide basic needs like food to these seekers,” shares Sanjay Pathak of Shivdham Foundation.
Shivdham Foundation is a trust based out of Varanasi and provides food and shelter to visiting saints. Usually, these saints have renounced worldly pleasures and often rely on donations to meet their basic needs such as food and shelter.
“There are a lot of sadhus visiting Varanasi and they struggle to fulfil their basic needs. These saints have no family or someone of their own. This is where we felt the need to extend services to ease the lives of these devotees.”
How Can You Help?
Shivdham Foundation requires huge quantities of groceries and essential food items to cater to the increasing demand. The groceries will be used to feed hundreds of saints on the holy ghats of Varanasi. On this Maha Shivaratri, participate in the festival celebrating the victory of knowledge over ignorance by being a contributor to the noble cause. We look forward to your donations.
About the NGO: For over 8 years, Sanjay Pathak has dedicated his life to serving sadhus and those in need. Today, he feeds over 400 hungry sadhus. With your support, he can bring hope to many more.
