“The only time I had seen Savitriamma cry was when she got a call from her family saying that they won’t be able to visit her regularly from now on. Her tears broke my heart. But that also inspired me to work harder for these senior citizens who have no one to look after them in the sunset years of their lives. At AMK Old Age home, we work day and night to give them happiness and comfort,” - Sujin, Secretary, Athencottasan Muthamizh Kazhagam (AMK). 

More than 50 years of serving the underprivileged have taught AMK a vital lesson - kindness can heal deep wounds 

Athencottasan Muthamizh Kazhagam is a voluntary secular social service organization established in 1971. It aims at providing a social security net and creating access to basic needs for the disadvantaged population. The seed was sown by Pulavar T.Retnaswamy, now a retired teacher, who named the organization after his mentor Pulavar Athencottasan. “Health For All’ was the motto behind this organisation. 

“In the last 50 years, of dedicated service, we have addressed a variety of issues for the poor and the marginalized people. We have not only worked for underprivileged children but also their parents who are often victims of substance abuse. Our de-abuse centre is one of the best in Tamil Nadu.” 

In 2010, they started Home for the Aged at Courtallam in the Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu. Now 50 aged people are enjoying a homely atmosphere in this home. AMK has 15 branches across Tamil Nadu catering to over 350 senior citizens in the state. With love and compassion, they’re trying very hard to give these abandoned souls a home of their own. 

“All they want is some company and someone to take care of their basic needs. We have made arrangements for recreational activities for them - we have seen how a little bit of kindness can make so much difference. We want to help many more now.”
