At least 28 lives have been lost -- 15 in Uttarakhand and 13 in Himachal Pradesh -- due to devastating cloudbursts that started last Wednesday night. Over 55 people are still missing in these areas.
The relentless rains have triggered landslides, blocking key highways and cutting off entire areas. Rescue operations are in full swing as teams search for survivors and navigate the extensive damage, estimated at around Rs 700 crore.
Drones are being deployed to access isolated areas, and the Indian Air Force has stepped in with Chinook and MI17 helicopters, evacuating 800 pilgrims stranded on the Kedarnath trek route. Over 410 rescuers, including the Army, NDRF, SDRF, ITBP, CISF, Himachal Pradesh Police, and home guards, are tirelessly working to save lives, even as they face challenges like power outages and severely damaged roads.
Hundreds of villages submerge and lives are shattered in Himachal Pradesh
A series of cloudbursts hit Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, causing widespread devastation. Over 103 houses have been damaged, and several bridges, shops, schools, and vehicles have been destroyed. In Samej village, 30 people are still missing. Rescue teams are deploying more machinery, sniffer dog squads, and drones to aid in their efforts.
Uttarakhand, too, is reeling under extensive damage
The heavy rains have sent the Mandakini river into a dangerous spate, washing away roads and electric poles on the Kedarnath Yatra route. Many pilgrims and tourists are trapped, their spiritual journey abruptly halted by nature’s fury. A cloudburst in Junglechatti near Lincholi has caused extensive damage, leaving roads impassable and large stones falling from hillsides. The IAF has rescued 94 people so far, but 350 still await evacuation.
The situation is dire, with some villages completely without electricity and severely damaged roads. Amidst fear and loss, the Donatekart Foundation, along with the on-ground NGOs has resolved to support the victims and send immediate relief.
