Story of the changemaker
On September 16, 2025, Dehradun faced a deadly cloudburst as 264 mm of rain fell in just 24 hours, overwhelming the Tamsa River and nearby streams. The sudden deluge unleashed flash fl@#ds and landslides that swept through homes, farmlands, and roads, leaving devastation across the region.
At least 15 people have lost their lives, and 16 remain missing. Over 900 people were stranded as bridges were washed away and major roads were blocked, cutting off villages from vital aid. Families watched helplessly as fl@#odwaters destroyed their homes, belongings, and means of livelihood in minutes.
In areas around Raipur, Sahastradhara, Maldevta, and the outskirts of Dehradun city, families like Sunita Devi’s are struggling to survive.
“The fl@#d took away everything we owned, our home, our cattle, and even our fields. We have nothing left to return to,” she shares.
What Survivors Need Now
House reconstruction: Materials and support to help families rebuild homes swept away in the fl@#ds
Ration kits: Rice, pulses, oil, and essentials to feed families left stranded and hungry
Hygiene kits: Soap, sanitary pads, disinfectants, bedding, and safe drinking water
Medical support: Health camps, medicines, and first aid for the injured, children, and elders
Education materials: School supplies to help children return to learning amid the crisis
How Relief Teams Are Responding
Local NGOs, volunteers, and community groups have mobilized to provide urgent relief. Cooked meals, ration kits, and hygiene packs are being delivered to stranded families. With roads and bridges damaged, aid workers are braving difficult terrain to reach even the most isolated areas. Medical camps are being set up to treat the injured, while temporary shelters give families a safe place to rest as they begin the long road to recovery.
“Every kit we deliver, every family we shelter is a lifeline,” shares a volunteer. “We are committed to standing with Dehradun until every family feels safe again.”
