Help Girish Look After Thousands Of Abandoned Kids And Give Them A Safe Home
Project
Girish Kulkarni was all of 8 years, when he was exposed to the seamy side of life. As luck would have it, Girish was using a shortcut to reach his English coaching classes in time from his Maths tuition. And that was how he saw girls and women, some even of his age, being forced into s*x work.
This detour gave a new direction to his life
Even at that tender age, Girish knew that he had to do something for the s*x workers and their children and this desire to help them grew with him. Joining youth organisations with their slogans of changing the world didn’t seem to offer the direct action he felt was necessary. Realising that his own time and resources were limited but also wanting to ease his conscience, he decided to think globally but act locally.
He worked very hard trying to make the smallest changes in the lives of these women who have hardly known love.
“It was common of men to grope and harass the s*x workers. Slowly but steadily they chose to stand up for their rights. Seeing them happy was what made me continue my work and finally start Snehalaya in 1989,” - Girish Kulkarni, Founder, Snehalaya.
Snehalaya also has its own adoption centre where they work to support abandoned children and get them adopted. It’s unknown exactly how many babies are abandoned each year in India, with some sources reporting up to 11 million children, but it is known that over 90% of them are girls. Babies are abandoned for many reasons: victims of r*pe or unmarried mothers fearing recriminations, being unable to financially support a child or simply not wanting another girl in the family.
Many of the infants who survive are very fragile and/or premature and require hospitalisation and intensive care. Their adoption process finds loving families for those unwanted and we’re with them every step of the way ensuring a safe and smooth transition to their new home.
Support Girish in his noble efforts
The pandemic has worsened the conditions of these children who have no one in this world. Snehalaya is literally a ‘home of love’ for these kids where they are given medicines, care, nutritious food, and a good life. They try their best to give them a family and home that they have been denied at birth.
“With your support, we would be able to reach out to many more children in need. With proper guidance and help, these children have a bright future in store. Please help us by donating groceries, hygiene products and toiletries.”
These children are victims of circumstances - every donation that you make will help uplift them.
About the NGO: Snehalaya has been working in rural India for almost three decades to rescue, fight for the rights and rehabilitate those adversely affected by the commercial s*x industry, poverty and droughts. They started rescuing trafficked and forced women and children from red light areas in 1989 and have been fighting HIV/AIDS, reducing 2nd generation prostitution by 100% and ensuring there are no minors working in the s*x industry in our district ever since.
