Story of the changemaker
“It all started when I saw a small boy being beaten up at a Dhaba near my workplace. He was both physically and mentally challenged, and was working for the Dhaba owner in exchange for food. He didn’t have a family. He didn’t even know his name…maybe he was never given one. It broke my heart to see him live like that. That day, instead of going to work, I took the child with me to give him a home and a family,” recalls Anjina Rajagopa, Founder, Sai Kripa.
The boy was named Rajat, and he became the first member of Sai Kripa’s Bal Kutir - a safe home for Parentless and abandoned children. As of today, more than 8,000 children have benefited from the organization.
Bal Kutir wasn’t just Anjina Rajagopal’s brainchild. It was her heartchild.
When she was a schoolgirl, she saw children younger than her begging for food and alms. It had moved her immensely. When she was 26 and had lost both her parents, the image came back to her again. She decided to dedicate her life to them. She founded Sai Kripa in Noida to change the lives of these children. The first project she took upon was to start Bal Kutir, a home for these children.
“In 1990, Bal Kutir opened its doors. From newborns to teenagers, children of all ages and from all walks of life became a part of my big family. It was heartbreaking that so many children were abandoned, some just hours after their birth. But I was grateful I could give them a second chance at life…” - Anjina Rajagopal smiles.
Today, Bal Kutir provides more than just food and shelter to the children
Apart from hygienic accommodation, every child is given nutritious meals and sent to good schools. After their schooling, some are further provided with means for higher education, while others are provided with vocational training to become financially independent, based on their needs. The home also takes care of the children’s medical requirements to ensure their good health.
“Would a father settle for anything less than the best for his child? Would a mother ever hold back when she cares back for her child? No. I won’t either,” - Anjina Rajagopal says, determined
Over the years, Bal Kutir has impacted 8,000+ children
Sachin came to Bal Kutir as a newborn in 1992; today, he works at a reputed company in Delhi. Arvind, who came to Bal Kutir at 11 after the death of his parents, works as a food analyst at SIMA. Mahaveer, owing to his IQ, couldn’t handle academics; he received bakery training, and today he is a bakery assistant.
“Thousands have been reunited with their families. Many children have been married off. Many are financially independent and building their own future. But there are many more that need help…” Anjina Rajagopal says.
Having done this for 30+ years, Anjina now needs your help to keep going
Currently, 65 students reside in Bal Kutir. But the monthly expenses, including groceries for food, healthcare, and education, add up to 7.5 lakhs. With newborns, toddlers, young children, teenagers, and adolescents all under one roof, salaried staff, too, are essential. But Anjina Rajagopal can’t do it alone. She needs your help to continue her mission.
Your contribution can keep this home alive. Be part of these children’s second chance at life. Support Bal Kutir.
