“Just a few weeks ago, I remember answering a rescue call about a 90-year-old man lying on the road - the kind people who had called us said that the man seemed very sick. We wasted no time to reach the location and immediately gave him some water to drink. But we couldn’t save him - he passed away in my arms and my only consolation was that there was someone to give him water during his final time,” - Dr. K. Niranjan.
Founded by Dr. K. Niranjan, and his wife Dr. Katyayni, along with their compassionate team, Apna Ghar has been a sanctuary for the helpless, abandoned, and sick since its inception on October 14, 2018.
Apna Ghar doesn’t just provide shelter but heals broken hearts and abandoned souls
Nutritious meals, clothing, and a safe home - every aspect of a resident's well-being is catered to with utmost compassion here at Apna Ghar.
With over 15 dedicated staff members and the invaluable contribution of recovered residents, Apna Ghar is truly a community-driven initiative. Whether it's lending a hand in the kitchen, assisting in the tailoring shop, or crafting incense sticks and eco-friendly diyas, everyone pitches in with their skills and passion.
Inspired by the success of Bharatpur Apna Ghar in Rajasthan, Niranjan and Katyayni have rescued over 1672 individuals since the Ashram came into being. They work tirelessly day and night to ensure the well-being of the 453 residents or Prabhujis in their care.
“Our rescue team patrols the surrounding areas, looking out for those most in need of assistance. Recently, we rescued a frail elderly woman who could not walk even a few steps. Having gone without food for many days, she could barely talk. She is now in our care and on the path to recovery.”
This sanctuary is not just for the abandoned and abused elderly but for anyone in need who has no one to look after them. Niranjan recalls how their team rescued a trafficked girl.
“When we found her, she was traumatised and scared. She wouldn’t tell us anything. But with love and patience, she slowly opened up to us and we reunited her with her family in a small village in Assam.”
Such acts of compassion and bravery underscore Apna Ghar's profound impact on the lives of those it serves.
Apna Ghar wants to reach out to many more in desperate need - you can help them
Niranjan and Katyayani have been using a considerable amount of their income in running the Ashram and while they get support from generous donors, now and then, it becomes tough to continue taking care of yeh 453 residents.
“The need is ever-growing and we need help with groceries, construction materials, hygiene products, rescue vans, and other necessities.”
Your contribution, no matter how big or small, will go a long way in sustaining this vital lifeline for the homeless and helpless.
