    Project

One of the most unique landscapes and the last homes of the Indian Wild Ass, Little Rann of Kutch in Gujarat is so much more than it appears to be. Between October to June, it is also home to thousands of traditional salt farmers known locally as Agariyas. These farmers harvest nearly 76% of the salt produced in India - and it’s no easy feat. They toil day in and day out under the blazing sun to harvest the salt. As a result, they also suffer various health risks such as skin lesions, severe eye problems and tuberculosis.

Helping Needy people - Agariya Heet Rakshak Manch is helping 6000+ Families of Salt Farmers - DonateKart

“Their living conditions in the desert are difficult. The weather is harsh and the temperature varies from 2 to 50 degrees celsius. They live here for 8 months and once the monsoon sets in, they have to uproot their whole lives and move back to the village. That’s when the Rann of Kutch is submerged in seawater. With their meagre income, they can barely manage to make it to the next day.” - Pankti Jog

Agariya Heet Rakshak Manch Supports These Hardworking Families

Once the rainwater recedes in October, more than 8000 Agariya families migrate back to Little Rann of Kutch to resume work. Agariya Heet Rakshak Manch (AHRM) is doing everything they can to support these families.

Salt Farmers Hardly makes Money - Help them in Feeding their families - DonateKart

“Agariyas barely make 1 rupee for 1 kg of salt, while the salt is sold at Rs. 20 per kg in the market. They hardly make enough to sustain themselves and their families. They don’t even have access to essentials or groceries at Little Rann, and have to travel long distances to get the basics. Their children are severely malnutritioned due to this, and to add to that, their education is also compromised due to the lack of access.”

AHRM has been supporting these farmers for over 15 years, and now, they need your help to continue working towards giving them a dignified life.

    How You Can Help

Agariya Heet Rakshak Manch now needs your help to get groceries and a van so that they can cook nutritious meals and distribute them to the 6000+ families they wish to support. The Agariyas suffer through harsh weather conditions, malnutrition, lack of access to essentials and so much more throughout the year, all to try and stay afloat. Your contribution will ease a big burden off their shoulders and help them continue working to the best of their abilities without worrying about making it to the next day.
