Story of the changemaker

“Over 14 lakh people were affected due to heavy floods in five river systems of Odisha.” - The State Government was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal led to heavy rain and subsequently, a flood-like situation in parts of Odisha. The Bhadrak district blocks were said to be the worst hit. 550+ villages have been affected by the flood water. People from low-lying areas of the state were shifted, however they’re still suffering no end. Most villagers are into farming. Now they have lost their lands. Their houses are submerged.

Many people are stuck in villages which are completely cut off due to floods. Their health is at risk. The lost crops have landed them in huge losses. There is no food or dry ration for them to cook. Surviving under such conditions is profusely difficult. While the water has begun to recede, they still cannot tell how long it will take for it to go completely. Even after that, they will have to struggle with rotten crops. Hence, these villagers are losing hope by the hour.

“My house was nearly filled with flood water. I had no option but to shift to the rooftop of a nearby building along with my kids. We stayed up there for 4 days straight without food and protection. After that, we were rescued and brought to this makeshift shelter. They say our village is still pretty much cut off. I don’t know when we’ll be able to return home,” says Pratima Sahoo from Benipur village, having spent 3 weeks in a shelter along with hundreds of affected villagers.

Sikh Aid, a non profit organization founded on the principles of selfless service and universal love, has come to their rescue on time. They draw their inspiration from Guru Nanak Dev Ji and his ideals, namely, NAAM JAPO, KIRT KARO, VAND CHHAKO. The team works across 7 cities to provide aid to the needy. During the nationwide lockdown, they reached out to the daily wage workers and migrants with food, medicine, and footwear.

Even since floods hit the villages of Odisha, Sikh Aid has been striving to help the affected people. Currently they are feeding 4000 villagers daily. Working on the ground, they can see how things are still far from normal. Hence, they want to stand by the hapless villagers until the situation is much better. In their endeavor, they require help from people like us. The team wants to provide the affected people with food aid. It can only be achieved with grocery kits that contain all the daily essentials. One such grocery kit can help a family keep going for at least a week.

You can be a part of Sikh Aid’s journey by helping them feed the affected families of Odisha floods. Your kindness and support will bring them back to mainstream life. They will have hope and happiness once again. Come, let us make that difference together for the victims of Odisha floods.
