Tryambak Rao Gaikwad is busy planning his daughter’s wedding which is going to be held tomorrow. The final touches are left and he is nervous thinking if things will go as planned. Yet he has never been happier - he wants to share his happiness with everyone. He wants to tell the world that with love and care, guidance, and support, even children from underprivileged families can live a life of respect and dignity.

“They were twins, you know! Her elder sister got married a few months back to a very good man in Surat and tomorrow the younger one is going to start her new family. So many others from the Ashram have got into good jobs. When they had lost their fathers, these children couldn’t think that they would be able to live a life like this….Nothing makes me happier than seeing these orphans stand on their own feet,” - Tryambak Rao Gaikwad, Founder, of Adhatirth Ashram.

He is a father figure to over 300 boys and girls who have lost their parents to farmer suicides. The darkness that filled their lives when one day, suddenly, they lost their parents is now being filled with happiness and hope.

Children from 32 districts across Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Konkan have found refuge in this Ashram in Nashik

Gaikwad belongs to a family of farmers and saw several cases of farmer suicides in his known circle. While he was able to get proper education and become an engineer, the thought of something for the struggling farmers stayed with him.

“The farmer suicide cases were on the rise in the late 90s and early 2000s and my friends and I wanted to support the families who are left behind by these farmers who were forced to end their lives under dire circumstances.”

A January 2023 newspaper article claimed that on average, 8 farmers end their lives in Maharashtra every day. Some are unable to pay the loans they’ve been forced to take from local moneylenders while others have incurred huge crop losses due to erratic rainfall and a lack of proper irrigation facilities. For the last several years, Maharashtra has topped the list of farmer suicides in the country, followed by Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana.

In 2009, Gaikwad opened Adhatirth Ashram in Nashik, Maharashtra, and works tirelessly for the welfare of hundreds of children of farmers who have lost either both or one of their parents to suicide. They’re given proper meals, an education, and the love and care they deserve. The Ashram also provides shelter and food to the ‘bais’ or the widows of those farmers who have died. They work as wardens at the Ashram looking after the children, showering them with motherly love.

Over the years, Gaikwad has helped countless such children get into government jobs - some are IPS officers, while others are working as teachers. Gaikwad proudly says that they have all kept in touch with him and have even donated their first salaries to the Ashram

They lost their parents to fate but you can give them a second chance

The daily expenses of the Ashram are dependent on donations and there are several things that they need to give these children a better quality of life. They are in urgent need of groceries and hygiene materials and you can help them in their hour of need. Donate now and make a difference today.

About the NGO: Based out of Nashik, Maharashtra, Adhatirth Ashram is home to 300+ kids who have lost their parents to farmer suicides. For the last several years, Maharashtra has topped the list of farmer suicides in the country. Tryambak Rao Gaikwad founded this institution and has been working very hard to uplift these children who have no one to look after them. Here they’re given proper meals, education, and hope for a better future. It is because of his tireless efforts that hundreds of children were able to follow their dreams.
