Project
With old age comes a series of health ailments and diminished faculties. It is not just in terms of time that the elderly require our care, but also in terms of quality nursing and medical assistance to live a happy and healthy life. .
To care for those who once cared for us is among life’s greatest honours. The Sawali Care Centre in Maharashtra upholds this virtue in its entirety. Its motto is to provide service to the elderly and all those who need care and attention but have no one to look after them.
Purpose of Sawali Care Centre
Sawali Care Centre was formed in Kolhapur to care for such dependent senior citizens who need extensive assistance and have serious physical needs. But it is not essentially an old age home. Age is no bar for admission here. They cater to the needs of the physically dependent patients of all age groups. To this day Sawali has served inmates ranging from a two month old baby to a 102 year-old old lady as well. Sawali is the only center of its kind in the entire region of South Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Konkan and Goa. About 40 to 45% of the patients are admitted in the Sawali either free of cost or at concessional rates. Till date Sawali has served 1800 families and is continuously trying to make Kolhapur, a Beggar free city! Feats achieved by the Care CentreWith its continued endeavours, Sawali has managed to rid the streets of Kolhapur of all those who are homeless and have been living on the streets. Each of them now has their own bed and a room here at the centre. Besides providing residential aid to seniors who are physically dependent, Sawali also gives out wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and nebulisers free of charge for temporary use. The Sawali centre is a complete home for seniors and anyone who is in need of dedicated care and support. There are about 300 beds divided into general, semi-special, and special wards. Therapies like hydro-therapy and physiotherapy are available to all residents. Besides, there is a library, a critical care unit, and a multipurpose hall.
The residents at Sawali have access to round-the-clock nursing assistance, physician visits, special nutritional care, and physiotherapy, apart from their special requirements. The centre specialises in care for seniors with osteoporosis, those in a coma, and suffering fractures, immobilitiy, cerebral palsy, and mental degeneration. The facilities of pathological care, x-rays, and ambulances at short notice makes life easier and care more immediate.
“No elderly person should ever have to live in exile. The elderly form the basis of our society and must continue to feel so,” - Kishore Deshpande, Founder.
The Sawali Care Centre aims to give everyone the feeling of being wanted and valued. They want to make their residents feel that they are cared for and looked after.
How can you help
The centre has its share of needs too. With the number of dependents constantly increasing, the upkeep of care facilities and standards is becoming a challenge. In the wake of rising costs, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the centre to manage funds for groceries and adult diapers, which form a substantial chunk of their daily expenses.
With the kind of work that they do, the least we can do as conscientious members of society is to reach out and help Sawali as best we can. We may not be able to serve those that need help physically, but our donations can definitely see them through days of greater ease and comfort.
Let us join hands to help Sawali Care Centre look after its residents especially during these difficult times. About the NGO: The Sawali Care Centre is a complete home for seniors and anyone who is in need of dedicated care and support.
