Who are these people and what are their struggles

In India, every 4 minutes a person is diagnosed with leprosy, and more than 0.2 million people live in 800 isolated leprosy colonies across the country. Again, official data indicates that during the pandemic in India, only 0.14% of the 4.8 million members of the transgender community in the country could avail of government benefits due to their lack of documentation.

Even before Covid, missed out communities like like tribals, s*x workers, leprosy patients, HIV positive, differently-abled and many other lived at the edge of society but today with 84% of Indian households reporting a decline in income due to the pandemic, the most vulnerable and missed out communities are further pushed to the brink.

“Most of the people in the leprosy colonies are domestic workers. During COVID, the community has been sitting at home for months and many have lost their only source of livelihood. Similarly, the sandstone workers in Rajasthan suffer from silicosis or other respiratory diseases,” - Goonj Field Member.

How is Goonj helping them and how you can make a difference

“In the last 2 years, we at Goonj have deep-dived into the needs of missed out communities and figured out ways in which we can support them.”

Goonj in coordination with our 550+ partner network will nudge the missed out communities to self-identify a problem and solution in areas of their long-standing impact like infrastructure, water security, social stigma, menstrual health, education, etc. These clusters will then come together to self-implement their initiatives.

In exchange for the community's efforts, they will earn a customized kit of essentials containing recycled and upcycled urban discards from our units and community specific items such as ulcer kits, assistive devices, etc. These will address material poverty of the community and free up their resources for other expenses.

GOONJ is a 23 year old organization that is turning urban discarded & underutilized material into tools that bring ignored issues to light & convert it into a resource for rural development.
