This 137-Year-Old Gaushala In Kolkata Needs Your Help To Look After 7000 Cows

Feel free to ask Campaigner for a new update on this Fundraiser.

    Project

The year was 1885. A couple of Marwari cloth merchants gathered at Jamunadas Fakirchand’s shop in central Calcutta’s Sutapatti to protect and look after sick and injured cows that are left on the roads to fend for themselves. This gave rise to the Calcutta Pinjrapole Society, a non-profit organisation for cow shelter and protection. Currently, their office is in Armenian Street, Kolkata.

The Society’s aim is to serve the gaumatas who have known pain and suffering

Thousands of cows are left on the road and they end up eating harmful chemicals, plastics and die a painful death. Innocent and harmless, these animals deserve a life of comfort. For the last 137 years, Calcutta Pinjrapole Society has been working relentlessly to give these innocent beings a better life.

“This is the biggest gaushala in Bengal with 7,000 cows in its care. Our head office is in Burrabazar and we have seven gaushalas in the outskirts — Kalyani, Raniganj, Liluah, Chakulia, Sodepur (it has 2) and in Hazaribagh,” - Pawan Tibrewala, General Secretary, Calcutta Pinjrapole Society.

The Society has also been in the news for encouraging people to use cow dung cake instead of wood and electricity at the Nimtola crematorium in Kolkata. It is safe as well as environment-friendly. This also promotes cow protection and provides employment to people. The gaushala also uses gau mutra (cow urine) as a substitute for phenyl.

“But our major aim is to give the cows a life free of pain and suffering. We have been doing this for more than a hundred years now and we want to help many more in need. Your support will ensure that these cows and other animals in need get a good life.”

Every donation you make will make a difference

The need is ever-increasing and despite many kind-hearted souls coming forward to help the gaushala, they need more support to look after sick, injured and abandoned cows and other animals. You can donate fodder, medicines and husks and join hands with Calcutta Pinjrapole Society to help save 7000 cows in need.

About the NGO: Founded in Kolkata in 1885, this 137-year-old NGO has been working tirelessly to give 7000+ injured and abandoned cows a life of comfort. An initiative by Marwari cloth merchants, the Society is now a safe haven for animals in need.
