Story of the campaigner
Problems we are facing now -
The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world spreading out 140,000 ha area, lies on the delta of Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. Mangroves are extremely important to the ecosystem they inhabit. Physically, they serve as a buffer between marine and terrestrial communities. The sturdy root system of mangrove trees help to form a natural barrier against violent storm surges and floods. River and land sediments are trapped by the roots which protects coastline areas and slow down erosion. Mangroves are great carbon sinks. Such forests help the fight against global warming by removing CO2 from the atmosphere, most of which is stored within the plants. Keeping in mind its atmospheric and biodiverse importance UNESCO has declared it as a World Heritage site in 1987.
Sukher Swarga Foundation has taken a preventive measure to save its homeland from extinction by planting mangrove trees. It is a lengthy and laborious work done by us with great interest and sincerity. Collection of seeds, preparation of soil, nursing seed till implantable, finally plant the saplings by the different riversides of Sunderban area are long and costly procedures to perform to complete the plantation process and thus in 2021 we have planted more than 10000 mangrove saplings and this year we have estimated to plant around lack.
Moreover we arrange awareness programs on the importance of mangrove forest to make the coastal inhabitants aware of the significant role of mangrove trees in our lives.
The Impact -
Mangrove forests are considered as magical forests for their huge ability to decarbonize the atmosphere. Mangrove trees sequester carbon 2-4 times greater than mature tropical forests. Mangrove forests only account for 0.5 percent of the total coastal area but are responsible for 14 percent of CO2 sequestration by the global ocean. And according to scientific research the Sundarbans manages to sink 98 percent of the carbon emitted by the coal based power plant at Kolaghat in one one year.
The longer the mangrove trees exist, the longer the Sundarbans exists.
