Shankar Works Tirelessly To Give People With Mental Disabilities A Safe Home, Support Him
Project
“Sometimes we get calls from the police about someone helpless on the streets, and their condition is truly heartbreaking. They’re covered with filth and maggots, and haven’t eaten in weeks. We do our best to take care of them by bathing them, cutting their matted hair, and providing them with basic medical care. Sometimes we find their families, but other times, they stay with us at the ashram as family members.” - Shankar, Founder, Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam.
Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam now has 400 such men and women who are mentally disabled, old, and have been abandoned by their families. Here, they find acceptance, happiness, and a healthy life. However, Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam now needs your help to reach out to many more in need and give them a safe home.
Shankar Quit His Job To Care For The Helpless
Shankar established Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam in 2010 after losing his cousin to a gruesome accident. This changed the course of Shankar’s life.
“My cousin was intellectually disabled. The day he passed away, he somehow escaped from home and went out on the streets. Unfortunately, he got hit by a car. In just an instant, he was gone. I was in such shock. I couldn’t believe what had happened. That’s when I decided to quit my job in Mumbai and start an ashram to help those in need.”
Amma Nanna Anada Ashramam in Choutuppal, Nalgonda, Telangana, looks after the homeless, underprivileged, and the mentally disabled. They work to build a stronger nation where every individual is both psychologically and physically sound, and at least the bare minimum to survive.
The ashram provides them with accommodation, food, medication, and nurturing facilities. They empower them to live as normal human beings and view the world with a positive lens. They plan to give every homeless person a place to call their own.
They’ve Struggled Due To The Pandemic
Shankar has been using his savings to run the ashram, but more often than not, it falls short of the expenses. So he used to depend on donations from kind donors. But the pandemic stopped all that.
“It was a challenge because many of them tested positive for COVID, and we not only had to look after their medical needs but also give them nutritious food. While we were able to make it through with the support of kind donors, we now need to get back on our feet again and continue our service.”
