Be the Hope for 240+ Leprosy Patients Fighting for a Better Tomorrow

Imagine losing everything—your family, your home, and your job—just because of a curable condition. This is the reality for thousands living with leprosy. The disabilities caused by leprosy make it even harder to earn a living, forcing countless people into extreme poverty and begging. 

“They’re treated as outcasts, people are scared of them. No one even wants to come near them. Imagine being treated like that…”, Brijpal Rawat, Member, Dev Bhoomi Samiti. 

Dev Bhoomi Samiti, an NGO founded in 2015, is dedicated to uplifting the lives of the underprivileged in Uttarakhand. Since 2019, they have been working tirelessly on supporting a leprosy colony in Tapovan, home to over 240 people, predominantly women, who face severe stigma and discrimination.

Every day is a struggle for these individuals abandoned by their families

25-year-old Brijpal Rawat has always wanted to support those on the lower rungs of society. He was only 16 when he decided to give back to the community by helping those who cannot help themselves, ensuring they receive the support they need to lead dignified lives. And since then, there has been no looking back. 

He explains that these 240+ people completely depend on them for food and medical care. Dev Bhoomi Samiti and their dedicated team members work hard to reintegrate them into society. The people live in very poor conditions - the houses are broken and with no job or income, they are in no position to fix them. Little things like picking up a spoon, or going to the bathroom become difficult tasks for them, they need help every step of the way. 

“Some are tied to their wheelchairs for lives. The pain in their eyes is heartbreaking. They need urgent help with groceries, hygiene materials, and medicines.”

More than 240 people fighting leprosy can survive thanks to the tireless efforts of Dev Bhoomi Samiti.
