5 years ago, Sanjay Pathak, a businessman had no idea that his simple act of feeding the poor and hungry sadhus near Assi Ghat in the holy city would turn into something so massive. Five years down the line, he has his own organization, Shivdham Trust and he has been feeding over 100-150 hungry souls on a daily basis.
“I have never kept a count but I think over the years we have been able to feed around 10,000 sadhus and others on the streets who can’t afford a single meal a day. The look in their eyes, after they have eaten to their heart’s content and the blessings they shower on us makes our day. That is the only thing that keeps us going,” - Sanjay Pathak, Founder, Shivdham, Trust.
Warm meals and a place to rest - that is all they want
These sadhus have been living on the streets, depending on the donations and kindness of the passers-by and tourists. However, the pandemic has completely changed the situation. Number of tourists has reduced and so have the alms on which the sadhus and other homeless people have been surviving. This is where people like Sanjay Pathak come into the picture.
“They have no income of their own - they survive on the kindness of others. The scare of COVID has brought about many changes and these sadhus have been worst hit by it. There are others who earn by singing bhajans in the ghats. These families don’t even have a roof over their head - in this cold winter, they have been living under tarpaulin sheets. Our team is also working to help build them a home.”
