    Project

Circumstances and situations often compel us to do things we had never wanted to do. This is what happened to Surya and Anju Singh a couple of years back. Continuous complaints and phone calls, forced this couple to send away Tiger, a stray from the streets of Bangalore.

“I still can’t forgive myself for what I had once done. And this incident has left a deep mark on my mind. I had started feeding the street dogs from then on and till date, whatever I have been doing for these innocent animals, all of it has been in the memory of Tiger,” - Surya Singh.

Surya and Anju overcame several hurdles only to give these streeties a good life

Surya would dig into the bins, trying to find bones or any edible food for the stray dogs, he would go asking the restaurants for some extra food. Packing it in a bag that he carried with him at all times, he would feed all the strays he came across. But soon, the neighbours and passers-by took notice of this and told his wife to look after her husband, who, in their opinions, had lost his mind.

But I knew the pain he was going through and so I decided to support him by cooking the food at home and feeding the dogs together, - Anju Singh.

They started feeding around 50 strays but when multiple objections came because of their barking, the couple decided to put them in a shelter. It was then that they found out that the shelters didn’t provide the basic needs of these dogs. So, the couple finally decided to make a shelter of their own.

And that was how SAI (Save Animals India) Shelter began

Located on the outskirts of Bengaluru in Yelahanka, this shelter is now a safe home to over 150 stray dogs, cows and rabbits. Surya and Anju moved to Devanahalli in February 2015 and since then they have dedicated their lives to these animals who have no one to look after them.

Most of these dogs were infected and malnourished. With unending love and compassion, Surya and Anju, now above 60, have been nursing them back to health. Surya also gives dogs killed in road accidents a dignified burial. This also avoids airborne diseases spreading through the carcasses.

“We are both getting old and we want to build a permanent home for these children. We want them to have proper food, medicine and care. But for that, I would need your help. Anju and I, we both request you to come forward and donate generously towards construction materials, food and medicines.”

About the NGO: Started over 5 years ago in the outskirts of Bangalore, this shelter is a safe home to over 150 animals in need. This is run by a 60 YO couple who have dedicated their lives to these animals and treat them like their own children.
