It’s 2022, and even today, the stigma, bias, and lack of awareness regarding intellectual and physical disabilities continue. Children with disabilities struggle every step of the way. Especially those from lower economic backgrounds. Their parents, often daily wagers, are unable to provide them with the care they need or even access help. Sometimes these children can’t eat by themselves or even use the bathroom on their own. They often get agitated, confused and feel helpless. With little to no knowledge about the child’s capabilities and needs, how will these parents help their kids thrive?

She Wants To Focus On The Abilities Of The Child, Not Their Disabilities
Dr. Madhumita worked at a reputed hospital before she realized that children with disabilities don’t belong in the hospital - they deserve to be empowered and uplifted, given special attention and given the means to stand on their own feet.
She started Society for Child Development as a school for children with learning difficulties and it has now grown to impact over 1600 people with disabilities. The various wings of the NGO focus on empowering people with disabilities, and Prabhat, the educational arm works with children with disabilities from urban slums.

“We have over 130 children with us here, and many of them come from such poor families. These are kids with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities We give them healthy midday meals, but we know that back home, many of them sleep on an empty stomach. Even getting a handful of rice is a privilege for these families. Without essential nutrients, these kids’ growth is greatly affected.”

About the NGO:
Society for Child Development was started in 1992 by Dr. Madhumita Puri, with the conviction that there would be a way to create a world of equal opportunities for differently abled to establish programs and initiatives for its actualization. Started as a school for children with learning difficulties, the organization has grown over the last 30 years through various programs and has impacted 1600 persons with disabilities by helping them learn and provide for their families.
