With Your Support, This Padma Shree Awardee Can Feed Thousands Of Cows

The most special thing about Radha Surabhi Gaushala is that every cow, calf and bull has a name and identity. They are looked after with utmost love and care by Sudevi Mataji, who knows exactly which ones like attention and who like to be left alone.

Mataji, over 60-years-old, has the energy and spirit of a teenager. She has worked tirelessly to look after these gentle creatures ever since she found an injured calf years ago.  

“I found an injured calf thrown into the garbage on the outskirts of a village. Her back leg was broken, and the dirt and dust had formed a thick, cakey layer over the wound. Maggots were feasting on the exposed flesh and covered half her body. I took the calf home and nursed her back to health. That’s when the real journey of my life began.” - Sudevi Mataji

From One Calf To Over 2500 Cows, The Gaushala Grew In Strength 

Before she knew it, Sudevi Mataji had about 40 calves and 4 cows. She then rented land in the fields to care for them, and people kept bringing old, sick, and injured cows to her. Sudevi Mataji didn't have the heart to turn them away. She then started the Radha Surabhi Gaushala in Mathura, a safe and welcoming home for cows. Today, she has over 3000 cows whom she takes care of. Nearly half of these cows are permanently handicapped, sick, or injured.

“I came to India as a passing tourist over 40 years ago and was irresistibly attracted to the country’s spiritual heritage and traditions. I came in search of the right path to the ultimate goal of life and I still continue to practice what I found and learned.”

However, all of this hasn’t been without its challenges. Mataji had to shift premises a few times to accommodate the increasing number of cows. She has to depend heavily on donations to run the shelter, but even that isn’t enough. With monthly expenses at about 35 lakhs for the upkeep and care of the cows, she needs your help urgently. She just can’t do it on her own.  

You Can Help Build A Shelter For Hundreds Of Cows

With the growing number of cows and calves, the current shelter is just not enough. The lack of space and resources is a challenge. While Sudevi Mataji wants to continue giving these cows the best life possible, she can’t do it without your support.  

She now needs your help to get construction material to build a shelter on the land that was donated to them by the government and fodder. With this shelter, Sudevi Mataji will be able to take in many more abandoned and injured. The fodder will keep hundreds of cows healthy and aid their recovery.
