Story of the changemaker

Everyone who knows Puja Bahukhandi can’t help but talk about everything she does for stray and injured animals in Uttarakhand. Whether it’s during the day or at midnight, you will always find Puja feeding hundreds of stray dogs in the area.

“Not just in India, but everywhere around the world animals are treated with such cruelty. More often than not they’re considered only for their meat and nothing else. But we have to understand that animals feel pain, they have emotions. So very early on I decided to dedicate my life to these animals. I may not be able to change every animal’s life, but I’m going to try to do my best.” - Puja Bahukhandi, Animal Activist

Her Compassion & Dedication Have Saved Many Lives

For over three decades now, Puja has been working for the betterment of abandoned, homeless and injured animals. She is also the co-founder of Raahat, Uttarakhand’s first animal hospital and recovery center.

“I adopted my first stray, Jaadu, when I was very young. So I always had a soft spot for animals. When I was older I would see so many stray dogs around me dying of hunger, their puppies with malnutrition and starving, or being killed in accidents. It was heartbreaking. That’s when we decided to start the first animal birth control program in Uttarakhand about 20 years ago. And I haven’t looked back. These poor animals can’t speak for themselves, we have to be their voice.”

Rescuing animals is not a hobby for Puja, it’s her passion. She currently has over 24 dogs living with her in her house, whom she takes care of with utmost love and kindness. Puja has taken care of these animals all by herself these past few years, however, the pandemic has proven to be a big hurdle now.

Despite Challenges, She Continued Her Efforts During The Pandemic

With the first lockdowns in place, Puja knew she had to do something to help feed the strays. She started cooking food by herself in her own house and feeding the dogs throughout the day. Thanks to her, hundreds of dogs in Dehradun were saved from going hungry.

“My mission is to regularly feed these dogs and give them the care they deserve. But now I’m struggling to do this on my own. I’ve had to face many financial issues due to the pandemic, and now I need your help to feed these innocent voiceless creatures.”
