Story of the changemaker
Born to farmer parents in a small village called Irlewadi in Barshi Taluka, Maharashtra, Prasad Mohite has experienced countless trials and tribulations throughout his life. He lost his father to suicide when he was just a young boy and was forced to start working to afford his school fees and food.
“It was a very difficult time for my family. We were in debt and our relatives didn’t come forward to help. It was my mother, my two sisters, and me, and overnight we had to learn how to survive without the backbone of our family. There were days when I didn’t want to continue living, but something in me changed. I knew I had to work hard and make a name for myself, but above all, I wanted to help all those children who suffered as I did.” - Prasad Mohite, Co-Founder, Prarthana Foundation
Prasad Quit His Job To Become An Auto Rickshaw Driver
Prasad was determined to complete his studies, and through his grit and determination, he was able to finish his post graduation in Social Work. He then started working as a project manager but soon realized that he wasn’t able to give enough time to what he wanted to do the most - help others. So Prasad quit his job and started working as an auto-rickshaw driver.
“I met my wife Anu when I was working and we both had the same goal. She’s also from a very poor family and had to work her way up to be where she is. So we decided to work together towards this cause. We registered our organization in 2018, the same year we lost our newborn baby girl. We might have lost our baby, but through Prarthana Foundation we have become parents to hundreds of children, and we are so grateful for that.”
Prarthana Foundation was named after Prasad and Anu’s baby girl who unfortunately died the day she was born. While they were devastated by the loss, they didn’t let it stop them from taking their mission a step forward. Today, in her name, they have helped hundreds of children and people in need. Through Prarthana Foundation, Prasad and Anu educate and take care of nearly 300 children now. Their aim is to ensure that no child who has been orphaned (by farmer suicide or otherwise), and no homeless or destitute person suffers. They take care of their education, food, accommodation, and overall well-being.
They’ve Sacrificed A Lot To Continue Their Noble Work
Prasad has been an auto driver for 4 years in Solapur now and has had to overcome many challenges along the way. He sold 5 acres of his land to start the residential facility on a rented property. Anu and his mother sold their jewelry so that all the children are well taken care of. They’ve not only put in their own money but given all their time to working for the betterment of orphaned children.
“We could only accommodate 10 children and a few senior citizens, so I sold my land to build a bigger home for over 100 children and 50 senior citizens. Just when we started the construction, the pandemic struck. And that point, hunger was the most important issue we wanted to address. So we had to put the construction on hold. Now, I don’t have the means to continue it on my own anymore. I have used everything I had.”
How You Can Help
Prasad now needs your help to build a safe and secure home for 100+ orphaned children and 50+ senior citizens who have no one else to rely on. Your contribution towards the construction material will help him complete this residential facility. He also needs your support to get grocery kits to give them healthy meals.
Your contribution will make a world of a difference to these children who have only known pain. You can truly make a difference.
